First, recognize the text
Optical character recognition, or OCR, identifies text in an image. A sharp, evenly lit receipt is easier to read than a faded, folded or partially hidden one.
In CheckoutKeeper, text recognition starts locally on your iPhone. You can scan paper or import an image or PDF.
Then, organize the purchase information
Reading words is different from understanding which number is the total or which line is an item. Receipt extraction helps organize the available text into merchant, date, totals and other purchase details.
CheckoutKeeper uses an AI structuring service to help organize receipt information; original receipt images are not sent to that service.
What can be read depends on the source
Merchant names, dates, subtotals, tax and totals may be identifiable when the receipt includes them clearly. Item-level details can also be kept when enough information is available.
Abbreviated product names, damaged paper and unusual layouts can leave gaps. No scanner can recover a detail that is not present or readable.
Better capture, less correction
Keep the whole receipt in view, avoid shadows and check focus. Review the result while you still have the original nearby.
Always review before saving
Check the key fields and edit anything that was misread. Automatic extraction is a starting point, not a reason to ignore the source.
Once saved, use search and organization views to return to the purchase. Keep the connected original for context and check third-party requirements before relying on a digital copy.
